SciFi and Fantasy Art: Cross my palm with silver...This is the goddess of fate (elf). Her direct followers are, yes, fortune tellers. Her sacred colours are red and purple, and her sacred metal is (duh) silver. No fortune teller will wear silver though. Unlucky. I apologise for the cards. I don't do Tarot, and I've never seen any. I just have a vague notion that sun, moon and stars appear somewhere ... if I'm wrong, sorry, but I'm not changing it. :P
| | | | | Date | Name | Comment | | | 6 Feb 2004 | James Lunn | Look in to my crystal balls.....snort...chuckle (sorry i know i sound like i'm in a carry on film but i carn't help it) I could do with a vist from her she could tell me how much snow (if any) theres gonna be when i go on holiday (again i'm such a skiver) but i don't have any silver hang gone *rumages in pocket* hows £2.37....no oh well. As allways you've out done you're self with the colouring and the whole thing is layed out to prefection the boarder finshs it off nicely. You're work keeps getting better and better Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "37p? She takes 20p, 10p and 5p pieces. Bit like a BT phone booth that way ..." | |
| 6 Feb 2004 | Dumpysaurus | Okay, I feel sorry for this poor, comment-less picture as well, so despite my lack of commenting finesse, here goes! You know more about Tarot than I do, so the cards aren't an issue to me! As far as I'm concerned, they're just cool-looking card thingies that give this picture a very pleasing look. I love the bottom of her dress, but it looks like you are seeing it from a different angle than her body's at... like it's from above and she's from the front.... do I make any sense? Aaaanyway, just love the color choices in ALL these pictures of yours! *looks up* My goodness, did I really ramble on THAT much? Sorry 'bout that! ._. Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "Yes, the bottom of the dress ... I knew someone would comment on it. That was, and I admit it completely, a fluked experiment. I wanted to flare her skirt and skewed the perspective because I got bored. Heh. And colours are fuuuuuun." | |
| 30 Jul 2004 | Renn | I love this picture- those cards don't look like tarot cards, but i don't care, I want a deck like that!! I also love the angle, even if it was sort of accidental. ^^ Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "Personally, I wouldn't want tarot cards like that. The design is okay and sets off the picture nicely, but I'd want a more celtic-styled set. If Jim Fitzpatrick ever designed a deck I'd buy it straight off, even if I never used it!" | |
| 18 Nov 2004 | Jen M. Mayo (Kyan) | she's lovely.. and as for the cards, there is no set design for tarot. yes the sun moon and star do appear.. all three are important major arcana cards.. but i quite like the simplicity of these designs.. beautiful yet.. subtle.. it would be a beautiful deck. Don't change a thing! Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "The designs were heavily influenced by the Macintosh range. I love his use of lines and interweaving segments. But they're all my own as well, since I used no references. " | |
| 28 Jan 2005 | McKenna McAreavy | Very nice dress! The colors and every thing! You need to be a disiner on dresses. Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "Aw, thank you for the vote of confidence, but I'm kinda limited." | |
| 9 Jul 2005 | Ray (Ray Charles) Lewis | AH! It's beautiful. The dress is cool and the cards are awesome, but what really gets me is the HAIR! Oh, it's so pretty. I'd love to have hair like that. I'll take that star tarot too...Mine!!! *runs off with hair, tarot, and cute Puffball Pixie from the previous picture cackling like a maniac* Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: " Okay, the pixie and the tarot I accept. But the hair? We cannot have a bald Fate Goddess! (Goddess is whimpering in corner: "I didn't see that coming!") *chases for hair* She shall not wear a toupee!!!" | |
| 11 Jul 2005 | Ray (Ray Charles) Lewis | Oh, my page is still in the ticket line. It takes so darn long...Eight more days to go. I can't wait to get my pictures up. ^-^ | |
| 20 Mar 2008 | Anon. | I’m a fortune teller, amongst other things. The Sun, Star and Moon are indeed in the major Arcana of the Tarot - with a variety of meanings, depending upon the cards around them, but ALL genuine practitioners wear silver jewellery. It’s the metal that grounds the spirit to the physical body. It’s a guarantee that no matter where you go, you can always come back again..... safely and alone. Crossing the palm with silver was as much a protection charm as a payment. Most of us don’t take payment these days - we have extremely dull day jobs. Incidentally, you should check down the back of the drawers for something you’ve lost, but you’ll need to check twice because you’ll miss it the first time. Oonagh R. McAreavy replies: "It’s fascinating to get an insight into what genuine fortune tellers do. When I was drawing this goddess and ’inventing’ her followers, however, I decided that in their fantasy world they would not wear the goddess’s sacred metal (silver). If I was redoing the picture I would probably go do better research into the subject matter, so thank you for your information.
...I’ll check the drawers. "
| 21 Mar 2008 | Anon. | Fortune teller again - sorry, did I sound a bit grumpy? Didn’t mean to, I was just interested in the symbols and the silver - funny you reached for that as her sacred metal when she’s clearly wearing gold in the pic.... "real" fortune tellers don’t have any rules really, except things like not telling people they’re going to die under a bus (even if they are). Personally, I tend to give people a nice piece of cake and a comfy seat. Best buzz is reading for complete strangers. The idea is that the Universe is all made of the same stuff, and we’re a part of it, so by quieting the conscious part of the mind and tuning in the subconscious via a random set of symbols (leaf patterns, cards, whatever) you can see and read the patterns. A bit like the old riverboatmen used to read the ripples on the water’s surface and interpret them to know what was going on undewater. Everyone can do it if they choose to. You say something similar in one of your comments on another piece - about how when you focus your conscious mind on work (which keeps it busy and quiet) your "muse" (or subconscious, or creative side) is let loose. | |
